Option A: research paper - due 1/13.This paper must be word processed with either 11 or 12 point font and standard margins. It must be a minimum of 6 pages in length, one page can be your reference list. A hard copy must be turned in at the beginning of class. Due to problems with timely delivery of U-46 email, I will no longer accept emailed copy of paper. You must print it and bring it to class. You cannot print it in class, it must be collected at beginning of class in printed format. Plan ahead for last minute printing complications. If I do not have it in printed form on time, it will be penalized as late.
Second Quarter Research Paper Option 1: Research recent emergence of health care associated infectious disease outbreaks among the geriatric population. Describe how physical changes of aging, chronic diseases, and functional changes (such as immobility, incontinence, and dysphagia) make this population group especially vulnerable to infection. Identify pathogens that commonly cause outbreaks in long term care facilities. Focus on an example of a specific infectious disease outbreak that occurred in a health care setting within the past 10 years. Describe the chain of infection for the example outbreak, and describe how the outbreak was ultimately brought under control.
Option 2: If you would prefer to write about one of the topics the remaining healthcare quality issues of 2011, the following were not selected during first quarter and are available as topics for your project.
